I need to be honest in that this was not my original playlist. I had initially picked songs at random to make my list. But when Tha Homie Kev dropped his list and asserted that nobody could f*ck with him sonically, I knew I had to put a bit more thought into what I was giving the audience. We can consider this list to be both a statement and an experience.
I was a big fan of the Soulquarians and the neo soul movement. While this list is not that, it is heavily inspired by the ethereal energy of the Soulquarians and what Questlove once said bonded the group together - He said it was their “love for sickness in their work.”
I chose these songs for a two reasons.
Firstly, they all deliver both a funky analog sound as well as focused narratives on themes like despair and love. Which, if you are familiar with anything I do is quite on brand. See Who Even Cares and Masterpiece.
Secondly, this list is perfect for an incredibly productive reading and working experience. I struggle with a lot of noise in my head, and use sound to relax and get things done. The sweetness of this playlist is enough to calm my mind down without taking over. It destabilizes the noise in my head so my brain is focused. And the sound reflects my overall creative energy which is a phenomenal motivator.
Anyway, no long talking here. That’s my list. Listen to it and let me know what you think.
