The vibe of this 9-track issue of Turning PAGES is driven by sounds familiar to fans of Soul and Funk and many of the songs in this issue contain samples from those genres. The vibes are complemented by the contrasting vivid, lurid lyrics delivered by the likes of Jay Rock, Conway, and Boldy James.
The list sets a tone of introspection from Lute on “GED” that, by the end of the issue, flips the listener’s newfound security into a throwback gangsta-bop with Jay Worthy and Kamaiya on “Good Looking.”
Through these 9 heaters, I’m building a list that is thematically diverse and still sonically cohesive. Keen listeners will notice a heavy West Coast influence, whether we’re talking the production of The Alchemist or artists ranging from Anderson .Paak to Larry June to Jay Worthy to Dom Kennedy… and the list goes on. As a real LA city n**** currently situated in Harlem, New York, I practically love just about anything from Smoke DZA and Dom Kennedy; for me, they both capture a sense of “home” and “hometown” through their collaborations and I think that “No Regrets” is one of the better examples of this point.
I hope y'all have as good of a time listening to it as I had creating it. Go show it some love on Spotify to let the PAGES gang know they can’t really FWM on the sonics.
